Hiking the Amalfi Coast: Path of the Gods

Explore the stunning Path of the Gods on the Amalfi Coast, with breathtaking views, charming villages, and an unforgettable hiking experience.

Introduction

Looking for an adventure with unforgettable views? The Path of the Gods, or Sentiero degli Dei, is one of Italy’s most beautiful hiking trails, taking you along the Amalfi Coast with panoramic views, rugged cliffs, and Mediterranean charm.

Starting the Trail

The journey begins in the village of Bomerano, located in the Agerola region. Known as the entrance to the Path of the Gods, Bomerano welcomes hikers to a scenic, cliffside adventure. As you set out, you’re immediately surrounded by breathtaking views of towering cliffs, deep valleys, and lush vegetation. The path itself is a historic mule track, giving a sense of the ancient routes once used by villagers and traders.

Trail Highlights

As you continue, the landscape unfolds with stunning vistas of Positano, Capri, and the vast Tyrrhenian Sea. The path offers a mix of shaded areas under towering trees and open stretches where the ocean glistens in the distance. You’ll pass by terraced vineyards, small stone cottages, and colorful wildflowers, creating perfect spots to pause, take photos, and soak in the scenery.

Essential Tips

For this hike, sturdy hiking boots are a must, as some sections are rocky and narrow. Bring plenty of water, as the coastal sun can be strong, even in the cooler months. A hat, sunscreen, and a small snack are also recommended. And don’t forget your camera – each view is more stunning than the last.

Difficulty and Duration

The Path of the Gods is considered a moderate trail, suitable for most hikers with a bit of experience. It’s around 4.5 miles (7.5 km) long and typically takes 3-4 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop for photos. There are some steep sections, but overall, the trail is accessible to most hiking levels.

Finishing the Trail

The hike ends in Nocelle, a small, scenic village above Positano. Here, you can reward yourself with a refreshing drink and a bite to eat at a local café while enjoying a view over the cliffs. From Nocelle, you can descend a series of steps to Positano or catch a local bus.
